Jan Kovar, cell and molecular biologist, graduated in biology, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. Between 1986-1995 he spent nearly 4 years as a visiting scientist in the USA. In 1991 he became the head of Cell Growth Control Laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, Prague. Since 2003 he is the head of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague. Since 2007 he is a full professor at the Charles University, Prague. He is a member of several international professional societies (e.g. International Cell Death Society) and a council member of the European Cell Proliferation Society. He is involved in research concerning molecular mechanisms of apoptosis induction in cancer cells and molecular mechanisms of resistance of cancer cells to apoptosis induction.
