Biomaterial is any substance that has been engineered to interact with biological systems for medical purposes - therapeutic (to treat, improve, repair or replace the body's tissue function) or to diagnose. Biomaterials Assemblies can be taken from nature or synthesized in the laboratory using a variety of chemical methods using metal components, polymers, ceramics or composite materials. They are frequently used and / or adapted to a medical application, containing the whole or part of a living structure or biomedical device that maintains, enhances, or replaces natural function. Such functions may be as benign as those used for heart valves or may be bioactive with more interactive activity such as hydroxyl-apatite coated hip implants.
